This is me
My name is Sherwin Esguerra, and thank you for visiting my site. I'm a journalism student at the Philip Merril College of Journalism at the University of Maryland, College Park. I'm from Potomac, Maryland, and went to school at Winston Churchill High School. Here, I was part of the Literary Magazine, titled "Erehwon," where I worked as the Publication & Design Specialist. Taking part in this publication process sparked my underlying interest in journalism, leading to where I am right now. Casually, I explore my interests in art and dance.
As a journalist, I plan to use my voice to disseminate the understanding necessary to deface insensitivity and generate better methods of confronting the issues society faces. However, in this new age of digital media and technology, words alone are not enough to inform the public. The growing use of data and statistics as proof has become a necessary component in differentiating fact from fiction. I plan to use my learned knowledge of journalism and media to incite change that is supported by correct statistical evidence.
At the University of Maryland, Media, Self, and Society felt like the perfect match for me. Seeing as we are living in an age of digital media, it felt important to seize the opportunity to learn about the media's role in society and how it operates. From my experience in the Scholars program, I hope to gain a better understanding of how the media shapes the public and use that to my advantage as I pursue journalism.
